Peer Specialist has the responsibility of emphasizing the acquisition, development, and expansion of recovery skills to enable individuals to fully engage in their recovery journey. The interventions they provide are based on the therapeutic relationship they build with the individual and their family. As part of the team, helps clients develop essential skills, access recovery tools and community support, and motivates them to achieve and maintain recovery. Knowledge and skills required include personal recovery experience, ability to share recovery skills, knowledge of case management and rehabilitation methods, understanding challenges faced by individuals with mental health and substance use disorders, familiarity with legal requirements and court procedures, training techniques, effective communication, connecting clients to recovery resources, and general computer knowledge. Experience and education qualifications include willingness to self-identify as a client or person in recovery, one year of direct experience with the mental health system, completion of state-approved Certified Peer Support training within six months, high school education or equivalent, two years of responsible employment history, and passing a state certification exam if required.
