Director, Real World Research - Scientific Evidence & Policy Research (SEPR)

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Director, Real World Research to enhance the real world research capability within the RW Research Group, collaborating with researchers on design, analytics, interpretation, and communication of results of real world evidence (RWE) studies in support of JJIM products, solutions, and disease areas of focus.

Purpose: To establish and maintain a leadership role within the RW Research Group, delivering innovative RWE studies with quality and speed to meet critical business needs. The role involves contributing to strategic RW research plans, providing technical leadership in evidence generation and communication, and maintaining productive relationships within a matrix organization.

You Will Be Responsible For

The incumbent will apply advanced RW research methods and technologies (AI/ML) to deliver innovative studies. They will lead or participate in IETs to shape RW research plans, mentor colleagues, and support external partnerships with methods and data science experts. The role includes process improvement, standards development for observational analyses (economic, clinical, and outcomes), and leadership in publications and presentations. The candidate should be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, expand strategic, analytical, and communication expertise in RWE, and may have people management responsibilities in the RW Research Group.

Collaboration is required with RWV&E Leaders, VAP Leaders, RW Alliance Leaders, HEOR Leaders, and Data Science Leaders. The role involves external engagement with partners including methods and clinical experts, market access experts, AI/ML specialists, and data scientists.

Qualifications / Requirements
  • A minimum of a Masters degree is required, and a PhD is strongly preferred, in statistics, mathematics, economics, epidemiology, operations research, public health, health administration, or related fields.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience, or 8 years with a doctoral degree, in the healthcare/pharma industry, consultancy, academia, or health system.
  • Academic training and industry or payer experience in statistics, health economics, and outcomes research.
  • Experience in designing and conducting observational studies (prospective and retrospective), health economics and outcomes research, RWE, and/or pharmacoepidemiology.
  • Experience with analytics, coding, and management of administrative claims, EHR/EMR, survey data, or clinical registry data.
  • Knowledge of biostatistics, program evaluation, predictive modeling, and statistical computing.
  • Experience with economic/statistical models (regression, mixed models, survival, propensity score methods, non-parametric methods).
  • Broad expertise in biostatistical, econometric, clinical trial, and epidemiological methods.
  • Experience designing and executing real world head-to-head comparative studies and causal inference using real world data (e.g., Target Trial Emulation, prevalent user design, marginal structural models).
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple tasks across therapeutic areas.
  • Self-motivation, initiative, and deadline-driven work.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming (SAS, R, SQL, Python).
  • Experience managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; strong leadership skills.
  • Experience in one or more therapeutic areas: Hematology, Solid tumor, Immunology, Neuroscience, or Cardiopulmonary.
  • Preferred: MAIC and network meta-analysis; knowledge of alternative payment models; experience with SEER/MEPS; openness to novel research concepts; evidence-based medicine and comparative effectiveness for policy decision-making; multidisciplinary teamwork; experience guiding external service providers; collaboration with academia, health systems, or payers; people management or mentoring experience; approximately 20% travel (national, rare international).
