MISSION: SAMA: Music + Art is a Seattle-based nonprofit that grows empathy across cultures by connecting audiences to transformative experiences with global roots music and artists in the Pacific Northwest & worldwide.
VISION: We envision a vibrant, connected world full of an abundance of traditions and musical expressions, where all people are valued, supported, and heard. WHAT IS SAMA? SAMA is a cross-cultural prism. In Arabic, sama means listening and heaven. In Sanskrit, equal, or same. In Malay, together. And in Japanese, sama is used to address a teacher. Through the varied facets of its translations, it guides the mindset of our efforts. WHAT WE DO: We produce, promote, and partner to present transformative music and artistic experiences that weave together traditional and modern sounds, resulting in a vibrant reflection of the hearts and lived experiences of todays cultural stewards and protectors. Woven within the SAMA experience is listening. We listen to and learn from artists in real-time about their art, their home country, their roots and traditions, and how that shapes their art, bringing deeper understanding and meaning. In the U.S., we often learn about whats happening in other countries through the media or people sharing on someone elses behalf. This can lead to a lack of context or misrepresentations at best and a dehumanization of a country or people at worst. We welcome artists from around the world so that we can center their ability to tell their own stories through traditional and modern interpretations of the music of their home countries. WHAT WE BELIEVE: Music has a way of transcending language, background, and location through sound and expression. Its uniquely human and inherently socialand it is at its most powerful when experienced together, in person. Global roots music is about exploring the depths of tradition, heritage, and expression, so that we may better understand and interpret todays modern world and honor the cultural legacies that give it meaning.Role Responsibilities:
