Summary

Serves as the senior Museum Curator of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the expert authority on all matters regarding collection management, acquisition, accountability, valuation, documentation, preservation, display, loan, and disposition of artifacts (objects and art) of historical significance. Manages the use of artifacts for exhibits, interpretation, research, and DOJ history and heritage education, training, and outreach.

The duties and responsibilities for the Museum Curator generally include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serves as the senior Museum Curator of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the expert authority on all matters regarding collection management, acquisition, accountability, valuation, documentation, preservation, display, loan, and disposition of artifacts (objects and art) of historical significance.
  • Manages the use of artifacts for exhibits, interpretation, research, and DOJ history and heritage education, training, and outreach.
  • Oversees the development and presentation of museum exhibits and displays from initial concept through construction to launch.
  • Develops, establishes, and administers museum policies and procedures as well as short- and long-range plans for the expansion, improvement, and security of the museum collection.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to staff, interns, and volunteers; arranges and conducts tours of the museum and collection for senior officials and stakeholders; and develops impactful programming and educational materials relating to the museum, its collection, and DOJ history for use in professional development, education, and public engagement activities.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Museum Curator at (GS-1015-14), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.

If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).

Basic Education Requirements for the GS-1015 series:

  1. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.

  2. Combination of education and experiencecourses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

  3. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-14, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Determining the scope, content, and emphasis of the agency artifact collection; directing collection management, acquisition, accountability, valuation, loan, and disposition of artifacts; and managing the use of artifacts for museum exhibits, displays, interpretation, and history and heritage education and training.
