The position is located in Sells, AZ.

Position Summary:

Under limited supervision, accomplishes established objectives by planning, organizing, directing and evaluating all education and education outreach functions required to operate and maintain education activities and services provided by the Tohono O'odham Nation's Cultural Center/Museum.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning, and coordination of projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs the development of strategic plans for all Cultural Center/Museum education activities, projects and programs.
  • Responsible for long-range Cultural Center/Museum education program planning; implementation and maintenance of professional standards and serves as the education program liaison to the Cultural Center/Museum Board, Administration, schools and advisory groups.
  • Plans, implements, communicate and evaluate education goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with strategic plans.
  • Increases management's effectiveness by orientating, training and coaching Cultural Center/Museum personnel regarding established education program objectives and requirements; communicating values, strategies; assigning responsibilities and assessing accountability; establishing a climate for offering operational opinions and suggestions; providing and participating in educational opportunities.
  • Ensures Cultural Center/Museum effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-term education issues and goals that must be addressed; provides information and recommends options and course of action; implementing directives.
  • Achieves financial objectives by understanding and complying with budget procedures and requirements.
  • Serves as a liaison to all of the Nation's Branches of Government, Districts, School Districts, and communities regarding Cultural Center/Museum education activities, projects and programs.
  • Prepares and submits reports on the status, activities, and plans for current and future operations to immediate supervisor, and required personnel.
  • Assists in identifying and securing additional funding for the continuation and expansion of education program services and services delivery.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, codes, ordinances and statutes regarding Culture Center/Museum operations.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and grant/proposal writing and administration.
  • Knowledge of tribal, state and federal funding procurement processes and requirements.
  • Knowledge of statistical compilation and analysis.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Skill in effective management and supervision.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensibility to community issues and concerns.
  • Ability to prepare reports, exercise initiative and exhibit independent judgment.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, conferences and training.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Native American Studies or closely related field; and four years' work experience in a museum education, research, or library; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
