Job Title: Refrigeration TechnicianJob Description

The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for starting and operating refrigeration compressors and blast freezers required for daily production. The role involves evaluating the operating parameters of the refrigeration plant and making necessary adjustments. The technician will operate, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair refrigeration equipment, including all associated valves, piping, and instrumentation.

Responsibilities

• Start and operate required refrigeration compressors for daily production.
• Start and operate required blast freezers for daily production.
• Evaluate operating parameters of the refrigeration plant and make adjustments as needed.
• Operate, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair refrigeration equipment and all associated valves, piping, and instrumentation.
• Read electrical diagrams, evaluate, troubleshoot, and solve electrical problems.
• Document plant operational activities in the Engine Room Log Book and note equipment operational parameters on equipment log sheets.
• Monitor and maintain Refrigeration Systems.
• Perform periodic tests of the Ammonia Detection Alarm System.
• Read and interpret technical literature, drawings, prints, and diagrams to better operate and/or troubleshoot equipment.
• Request and store materials and supplies necessary to perform duties.
• Monitor water chemistry of evaporative condenser units and adjust chemical feeds to meet optimum operational limits.
• Coordinate and assist outside contractors performing services to the refrigeration system equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

• Experience in Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs).
• Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams.
• Strong troubleshooting skills.
• Refrigeration equipment maintenance and repair.
• Basic math skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Ammonia certification/experience is a plus.
• High school diploma.

Work Environment

This position requires working the night shift from 10 pm to 7 am, with training conducted during the day shift for 3-6 months. The work environment includes exposure to loud noise, food-grade dust, odors, and moving machinery. Conditions may include extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and exposure to allergens such as fish, shellfish, nuts, and more. The role involves working in cold storage and operating in areas with anhydrous ammonia, oil, and electricity.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, Virginia.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
