School Social Worker - Custer


Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of K-6 Student Services, to assist students, teachers, and parents in enabling students to derive the fullest potential educational experience from school by promoting positive self-esteem and resilience and providing suggested methods and plans for overcoming psychological or mental health problems.


Job Specifications


  • Engage in professional learning as aligned with school and district.
  • Partner with others in the school community to share expertise and create plans toward educational and social progress.
  • Perform casework service with individual students to support personal social and emotional wellness related to their educational and social progress.
  • Facilitate student groups around specific goals and topic areas of need. Ex. Mindfulness, stress management, self-regulation, social skills and communication.
  • Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the student's behavior.
  • Perform casework service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students, to increase the parents' understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.
  • Assist students directly toward adjustment to school.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education - $45,000 - $54,670, exempt


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Develop professional development and student seminars around specific goal areas and social skills.
  • Coordinate action with community care partners, to enhance collaboration and service delivery.
  • Experience working with students K-12, (including those in an alternative HS setting).
  • Previous successful experience with RTI / MTSS.
  • Address personal, social, emotional, academic, and vocational needs which impact educational goals.
  • Interventions and mental health services to develop social and life skills.
  • Interventions and instructional support to develop academic skills.
  • Preventative and responsive services.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Research and program evaluations.
  • Legal, ethical, and professional practices in compliance with Federal and State mandates as well as local policies concerning performance.
  • Ability to fulfill professional responsibilities as required by the district and/or State of Michigan including but not limited to maintaining ongoing continuing education as required to maintain highly qualified status.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile


  • Master's degree from a graduate school of a social work program.
  • Minimum of a 500-clock hour supervised social work practicum.
  • Satisfactory completion of 1 year as a school social worker with direction from a fully approved school social worker.
  • Experience working with elementary students required.
  • Interdisciplinary teaming experience desired.
  • Experience working with students with autism, desired.
  • Functional analysis and behavior plan development experience desired.
  • Preference is given to candidates with previous Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Training.

  • Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW)
