Medical Technologist (MT)
Chemistry : The employee will be expected to perform routine chemistry testing on automated instrumentation (Client Architect ci8200, Client Alinity, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80, manual chemistry tests) as well as routine daily and weekly quality control, and instrument maintenance.
Urinalysis : The employee will be expected to perform routine chemistry and urinalysis testing on automated instrumentation (Beckman Coulter Urinalysis, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80, manual urinalysis and chemistry tests) as well as routine daily and weekly quality control, and instrument maintenance.
Blood Bank : The employee will be expected to perform routine blood bank duties to include cross matching, antibody screening and identification, selected cell panels, processing in blood and blood products as part of weekly issue or emergency requests, and routine daily and weekly quality control procedures using tube and gel technology.
Hematology/Coagulation : The employee will be expected to perform routine hematology and coagulation testing on automated instrumentation (Sysmex, ACL Top, Alcor iSed manual hematology and coagulation tests) as well as routine daily and weekly quality control, and instrument maintenance.
Microbiology : The employee will be expected to perform routine microbiology testing including manual and automated testing. These duties shall include plating, gram staining, reading plates, subbing plates, Microscan setup, PCR testing, and other microbiology routine procedures.

  • Performs patient and QC testing according to established protocols and active in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing (PT) Program.
  • Independently tests, evaluates, documents, and reports patient testing and Quality Control (QC); identifies, documents, and resolves any collection, processing, testing
  • or reporting issues.

All contracted staff:

  • As part of safety, positively identifies patients prior to sample collection and samples prior to testing or aliquoting.
  • As part of safety and safeguards electronic and paper patient information.
  • Independently tests, evaluates, documents, and reports patient testing and Quality Control (QC); identifies, documents, and resolves any collection, processing, testing or reporting issues.

  • Assures patient-centered care and provides service in a manner that is professional and will avoid complaints from all stakeholders and customers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Staff/Facility
Medical Technologists (2 FTE)
Note: In the health care community, Medical Technologists (MT) are generally referred to as "medical laboratory scientists (MLS) or clinical laboratory scientists (CLS).
Minimum Education
(1) A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (e.g., laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.).
AND
completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Clinical practice programs completed after 1974 must have been accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, formerly CAHEA), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree.
OR,
(2) A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics,
AND
two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical microscopy, etc.) within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCPBOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). This experience must include performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory.
Minimum Experience
Currently Possess the appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT with three (3) years of recent chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology experience

VA HOURS OF OPERATION/SCHEDULING
VA Business Hours : The contractor may be required to provide services during the following times:
Dayshift
6:00AM-2:30PM
6:30AM-3:00PM
7:00AM-3:30PM
7:30AM -4:00PM
8:00AM-4:30PM
Evening Shift
2:00PM-10:30PM
2:30PM-11:00PM
3:00PM-11:30PM
3:30PM-12:00AM

Two (2) FTE Medical Technologists: 8:00AM – 4:30PM
a. Medical Technologists will primarily work the day shift. They will also work rotating weekends. Weekends may be scheduled as day shift or evening shift. Weekends scheduled are approximately 1-2 per month, however they may be more based on the needs of the lab.
b. When scheduled for a weekend day shift the Medical Technologist will be required to work 7:00am-3:30pm (on occasion this may be adjusted to 6:00am-2:30pm) and will have one weekday off prior to the weekend (week 1), and one weekday off following that weekend (week 2).
c. When scheduled for a weekend evening shift the Medical Technologist will be required to work 2:30pm-11:00pm (on occasion this may be adjusted to 2:00-10:30, 3:00-11:30 or 3:30 -12am) and will have one weekday off prior to the weekend (week 1), and the Monday following weekend off (week 2).
d. Shifts may vary to accommodate the dayshifts listed above based on the need of the Laboratory.
e. The employee may also be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. However, on call or standby duties will NOT be required.
f. Contractor's personnel shall be available and present during specified tour of duty hours at their assigned VAMC which will be established, and may be revised, as deemed appropriate for patient care by the Chief of Staff. Currently, possible shifts are as defined above.

 
  • Minimum Education:
    1. A bachelor's degree (or higher) in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science (e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.), and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program (must have been accredited if completed after 1974); OR
    2. A bachelor's degree that includes 16 semester hours of biological sciences (with one microbiology course), 16 semester hours of chemistry (including one organic or biochemistry course), and one course in mathematics, plus two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience within the last 10 years as a certified MLT by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • Minimum Experience:
    1. Current certification as MT, MLS, or CLS (ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT)
    2. Three (3) years of recent experience in chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology.
