Unit Description

The Acute Psychiatry Service (APS) is an essential component of the Emergency Department. It operates as a specialized unit dedicated to the stabilization, assessment, and management of patients experiencing acute psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, and substance-use emergencies . We care for a diverse patient population, spanning children and adults .

• Patient Population: Psychiatry/Mental Health
• Bed Count: 20-24
• Current Census: 20-24
• Clinician to Patient Ratio: 1 RN to 4-5 patients

 

Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Emergency RN will provide expert nursing care, including:

• Conducting thorough physical and psychosocial assessments of patients presenting with acute mental health crises.
• Developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized patient care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
• Administering medications, including psychotropic drugs, and monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects.
• Providing crisis intervention, de-escalation, and therapeutic communication to patients in distress.
• Managing patients with co-occurring medical conditions and coordinating care with the main Emergency Department.
• Documenting all patient care accurately and adhering to all hospital policies and regulatory standards.
• Maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients and staff.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• License: Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Years of Experience Required: Minimum of 1 year of recent RN experience.
• Skill Sets Required:
  • Emergency Department (ED) experience OR Emergency Psychiatry experience is required.
  • Inpatient Psychiatry experience is acceptable in lieu of emergency psychiatry experience, provided the candidate also possesses medical/surgical nursing experience.
• Certifications Required: Current BLS (Basic Life Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.

 

Preferred Skills

• Experience with IV insertion and/or phlebotomy skills.
• Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (RN-BC).
