Job Description

Ready to Dig In? Become an Underground Construction Operator with Us!

Are you the type of person who likes to get their hands dirty and make an impact? Do you want a job where every day is different, and your work helps shape the future of connectivity? If you're up for operating cool machinery, working with a team of skilled pros, and taking on projects that will keep you moving, then the Underground Construction Operator role might just be your next adventure.

What’s the Role All About?

As an Underground Construction Operator , you’ll be at the heart of the action, running the Directional Drill to install and maintain fiber optic cables underground. You’ll also be responsible for keeping your equipment in top shape, which includes daily maintenance, cleaning, and transporting the drill rig and truck. You’ll work with the construction team to ensure everything runs smoothly — from drilling to placing fiber optic cables in underground systems, such as manholes. Your contributions will make a real difference in building out networks that power communities.

Your Day-to-Day:

  • Master the Drill : Safely and efficiently operate the Directional Drill (HDD) to install fiber optic cables underground.
  • Keep Things Running : Perform daily maintenance on the drill rig and truck — a clean, well-maintained machine makes the job go smoothly.
  • Teamwork : Work with the locator to plan the bore path and assist with utility spotting, equipment setup, and the placement of fiber and duct.
  • Hands-on Work : Help with digging, potholing, and making sure all equipment is set up and ready for action.
  • Cross-Train : Be open to learning new skills, like becoming a drill locator and gaining new expertise.
  • Stay Organized : Complete daily production forms and project activity reports to keep everything on track.
  • Safety First : Follow all safety regulations and procedures — you’ll be working with equipment that demands careful handling.
  • Physical Labor : This job involves lifting, moving materials, and some good old-fashioned elbow grease.
  • Keep Things Clean : Make sure your vehicle and tools are always organized and ready to go.
  • Flexibility : Help out where needed to ensure the team meets project goals, from traffic management to installing equipment.

What You Need to Get Started:

  • A High School Diploma (or equivalent) — let’s make sure we’re all on the same page.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a similar role or construction work.
  • A valid driver’s license — you’ll be driving vehicles and rigs to job sites.
  • Basic construction knowledge — we’ll teach you the rest.
  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to handle manual tasks and follow directions — no solo acts here!

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • OSHA , CPR , or CDL certifications — extra knowledge always helps!
  • Lineman Certification — if you’ve got it, great!
  • Skills in handling ropes, lashing equipment, or using pounding tools for installation? That’s a win!

Other Things You Should Know:

  • On-Call : Be ready to respond to emergency calls from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. — flexibility is key!
  • Weekend & Night Work : Occasionally, you may need to work on weekends, nights, or travel overnight to different job sites.
  • Outdoor Work : This role is mostly fieldwork, so if you love being outside, you’ll fit right in.
  • Travel : This job requires travel, and we’ll cover your per diem.

Ready to dig into something exciting? If you want to be part of a team that builds something meaningful while gaining skills in a dynamic, hands-on role, apply today to become an Underground Construction Operator! Let’s get to work!
